NEW MOON NEW

I am new moon new
waiting to wax into existence

to become the burgled flare
of sun—the innocent thief

the journey to light
is through its dying

to start—blank slate—
to know nothing

an emptiness to be filled
and the contents stirred

with sparks cast by stars
and sun and darkness thrown

like wedding rice
from hidden holes

what will grow there
in that fertile field

where moonlight will sing
to the infant grain and weeds
